Blue Charcoal Grass Rug
This blue charcoal grass rug is hand double knotted in India, in wool, and measures 334 x 326 cm, close to a square. Its colour runs in soft horizontal bands from charcoal navy along the top edge through cyan and sapphire blue, so the whole surface reads a little like deep water. There is no border and no motif, just one continuous field of colour.
The design of this blue charcoal grass rug
The top band is the darkest part of the rug, close to charcoal navy with a grey cast. Below it the blue lifts into lighter bands of cyan and teal, then deepens again into a richer sapphire. Each band is built from fine streaks of several blues, so the colour looks mixed rather than flat, and the bands run edge to edge with no change of pattern.
Look closely at the streaks and you will see tiny flecks and short dashes of lighter thread lying in the same direction. They give the surface its grassy texture. The lower part of the rug carries more of the brighter sapphire and cyan, so it looks lighter than the top.
Indian weaving and the contemporary side
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area in Uttar Pradesh is the largest carpet-making region in India. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. This rug sits on the contemporary side of our Indian rugs, with its plain field and tonal colour rather than a traditional border.
How it is made
This rug is hand double knotted, so each knot is tied by hand on the loom, row after row, and the pile is then trimmed to an even height. Wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs, and this one uses it across the whole surface. Wool is resilient and springs back under foot, which suits a rug that gets daily use in a hallway or living room.
Hand double knotting gives this blue charcoal grass rug a close, even pile, so the streaks catch the light evenly across the field.
Sizing it for your room
At 334 x 326 cm the rug covers about 10.9 square metres. In a living room a three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 57 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs facing it can rest their front legs on the rug around a coffee table. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug shows roughly 47 cm at each end and 113 cm along each side, enough for the chairs to slide back. This blue charcoal grass rug suits pale timber floors, white or grey walls and simple neutral furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
