Handmade Blue and Charcoal Rainbow Rug
The Lapis Dusk rug is a blue and charcoal rainbow rug, handmade in India from wool and cotton and measuring 315 x 247 cm. That is about 7.8 square metres of floor.
The design up close
Bright royal blue fills most of this blue and charcoal rainbow rug, mottled with deeper navy so the colour never looks flat. Several bands of charcoal grey cross the width at intervals, and the ends are darker too, with a soft, broken edge wherever the blue and grey meet.
A fine diamond lattice shows in darker thread through the blue, and along the edge of each grey band a row of small diamonds steps across the rug like a line of beads. Up close the pile is a mix of royal blue, navy and grey strands, which gives the colour a textured, slightly streaked look.
There is no border. The pattern runs to the sides, and both ends finish in a short ivory fringe. The strong blue gives a room a clear focal point, and the charcoal ties it to grey sofas, black metal and dark timber.
Indian weaving and this rug
India has a long rug weaving tradition, with centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile, and some rugs mix wool with other fibres, as this one does.
How this blue and charcoal rainbow rug is made
This modern rug is handmade from an 80% wool and 20% cotton blend. Wool makes up most of the pile. It is hard wearing and springy, and its matte surface lets the blue look deep without glare. Cotton is a plant fibre that is firm and holds its shape, so the rug keeps a steady, flat body.
Being made by hand, the bands wander a little from one side to the other and no two rows match exactly. That small irregularity is part of what sets it apart from machine made contemporary style rugs.
Sizing it for your room
This blue and charcoal rainbow rug suits a large living room or a main bedroom. In a bedroom, a queen bed (153 cm wide) set across the 247 cm width leaves 47 cm of rug each side, and a king bed (183 cm) leaves 32 cm each side, enough to step onto something soft in the morning.
In a living room, a three seat sofa of about 2.2 m placed along the 315 cm length leaves about 47.5 cm at each end. Under a dining table, a 180 x 90 cm table for six leaves 67.5 cm at each end and 78.5 cm along each side, so chairs can stay on the rug when pulled out a little. A 240 x 100 cm table for eight leaves 37.5 cm at each end and 73.5 cm along each side.
Looking after your blue and charcoal rainbow rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
