Blue Abstract Swirl Rug
This blue abstract swirl rug was hand knotted in India in wool and bamboo silk. Navy, mid blue and pale blue lines loop across an ivory and grey ground, with gold-toned strands running through them, so the surface suggests tangled roots or currents.
The design up close
The design is one continuous abstract field with no border. The heaviest lines sit on the left and through the centre, in navy and mid blue, and pale blue strands weave among them. Open patches of ivory and light grey show between the loops, and the right side is lighter, with fine gold-toned strands crossing the grey. The lighter right side balances the darker left side, which gives the rug its weight. The lines overlap in places, so some strands appear to pass over others.
Some strands catch the light more than others, so parts of this blue abstract swirl rug look brighter as you move around it. The swirls do not follow a regular repeat, so each part of the rug looks different from the next.
Abstract design from India
Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Abstract swirl rugs like this one fit that direction, and this blue Indian rug suits a contemporary room. Some Indian rugs use bamboo silk, a viscose fibre made from bamboo cellulose, which has a silk-like sheen. An abstract rug like this suits a living room centre or a hallway, where its swirls can be seen from several angles.
How it is made
This blue abstract swirl rug is double hand knotted, so each knot is tied around two warp threads. Bamboo silk looks beautiful but is softer and less resilient than wool, so this rug suits rooms with lighter foot traffic, such as a bedroom or a study.
Sizing this blue abstract swirl rug
Please confirm the exact size in our showroom before you plan the room, so the rug is placed to suit your furniture. Because the ivory and grey areas are open, the rug lightens a room with dark timber or furniture, while the navy lines pick up dark sofas and blue cushions. A living room with plain walls lets the swirls of this blue abstract swirl rug stand out. A room with a light coloured sofa suits it well, because the open ivory areas keep the seating from looking heavy.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
Rubbing spills can dull bamboo silk, so choose a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand.
