Black and Ivory Geometric Rug
The Flagstone rug is a black and ivory geometric rug, made in India from wool and measuring 305 x 244 cm. This wool rug covers about 7.4 square metres, a size that suits a good sized living room or a dining space.
The design up close
The whole surface is a black field cut into blocks by thin ivory lines. The blocks are squares and rectangles of many sizes, from small tiles a few centimetres across to large slabs, and they lock together like crazy paving or a stone wall seen from above. The lines step sideways here and there, so the eye keeps moving.
The black is deep and close to solid, while the ivory lines are slightly raised and have a looped, nubbly texture against the smoother black pile. That change of height makes the grid catch the light and gives the rug a quiet relief when you look at it from a low angle.
There is no border or frame. The pattern runs out to the edges on every side, and the edges are bound in ivory, which finishes the rug with a fine pale outline. A geometric rug this bold becomes the main feature of a room, so keep cushions and art simple around it.
Indian weaving and this rug
India has a long rug weaving tradition, with centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile, and some rugs mix wool with other fibres.
How this black and ivory geometric rug is made
The pile is wool, which is hard wearing, springy and matte, and as a wool rug it holds its shape well. In the black areas that matte finish gives a soft, velvety depth, and against it the ivory lines look clean and sharp.
The two heights of pile do practical work too. The raised ivory outlines feel firm underfoot, and because the black blocks are a little lower, the grid stays crisp after people have walked across it. Strong black and ivory contrast shows dust more than a mid tone would, so vacuum it often.
Sizing it for your room
At 305 x 244 cm this black and ivory geometric rug works in front of a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m. Laid lengthways it runs past the sofa by 42.5 cm each side, so the coffee table sits fully on the rug.
Under a bed, turn the long side across the bed. A queen at 153 cm wide leaves 76 cm each side, and a king at 183 cm leaves 61 cm each side. Under a 180 x 90 cm table for six it gives 62.5 cm each end and 77 cm each side. A 240 x 100 cm table for eight fits as well, with 32.5 cm at each end and 72 cm along each side, a tighter margin for chairs at the ends.
Looking after your black and ivory geometric rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
