Handmade Beige and Brown Grass Rug
The Hessian rug is a beige and brown grass rug, handmade in India from wool and bamboo silk and measuring 301 x 246 cm. That is about 7.4 square metres of floor.
The design up close
Warm beige covers this beige and brown grass rug from end to end, with a quiet pattern of small brown marks picked out across the field: tiny crosses, open squares and short dashes, set in loose rows.
Faint horizontal bands, a shade lighter or darker, cross the rug at intervals and give it the soft striped grass look. From across the room it reads as a plain textured beige, and the pattern only shows as you come closer.
There is no border. The sides are finished in a beige and brown edge, and both ends have an ivory fringe. The soft colour works with white walls, oak floors and linen, and it lets the furniture take the lead.
Indian weaving and this rug
India has a long rug weaving tradition, with centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile, and some rugs mix wool with other fibres, as this one does.
How this beige and brown grass rug is made
This modern rug is handmade from wool and bamboo silk. Wool gives the pile its body. It is hard wearing, springy and matte. Bamboo silk is a viscose (rayon) fibre made from bamboo cellulose, with a silk-like sheen. It is softer and less resilient than wool, so a rug with it suits rooms with lighter foot traffic.
Here and there, lighter strands catch the light against the matte wool, so the beige looks a little brighter from one side of the room than the other. It is a gentle bamboo silk rug that sits well with other contemporary style rugs.
Sizing it for your room
This beige and brown grass rug suits a living room or a main bedroom. In a bedroom, a queen bed (153 cm wide) set across the 246 cm width leaves 46.5 cm of rug each side, and a king bed (183 cm) leaves 31.5 cm each side, enough to step onto something soft in the morning.
In a living room, a three seat sofa of about 2.2 m placed along the 301 cm length leaves about 40.5 cm at each end. Under a dining table, a 180 x 90 cm table for six leaves 60.5 cm at each end and 78 cm along each side, so chairs can stay on the rug when pulled out a little. A 240 x 100 cm table for eight leaves 30.5 cm at each end and 73 cm along each side.
Looking after your beige and brown grass rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand. Rubbing spills can dull bamboo silk, so this rug needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
