Handmade Beige and Brown Abstract Rug
The Tideline rug is a beige and brown abstract rug, handmade in India from wool and measuring 313 x 240 cm. This wool rug covers about 7.5 square metres, enough to set out a living room or a dining space.
The design up close
The colours stay within one warm family: pale beige and cream, sand, camel and a soft mid brown. They are laid in long horizontal bands across the width of the rug, like marks left on a beach by the tide or the layers in a sandstone cliff.
The darker brown areas are broken and patchy, with frayed edges that break up into small specks and short drips, while the lighter bands open out into quiet stretches of cream. Up close the pattern turns pixel-like, built from small blocks of each shade, and from across the room it softens into a washed, weathered look.
There is no border. The bands run out to the bound sides, and both ends finish in a short ivory fringe. The pile is thick and even, with a pebbly surface you can feel underfoot. It is a modern rug that still feels warm and earthy.
Indian weaving and this rug
India has a long rug weaving tradition, with centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile, and some rugs mix wool with other fibres.
How this beige and brown abstract rug is made
The pile is wool, which is hard wearing, springy and matte. The matte finish suits the earthy palette, so the browns look like soil and stone rather than shiny fabric.
As a wool rug it also has real body. The pile is dense enough to feel full when you stand on it, and it springs back after chairs and feet have pressed it down, which helps the bands keep their shape in a busy room.
Sizing it for your room
At 313 x 240 cm this beige and brown abstract rug works in front of a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m. Laid lengthways, it runs past the sofa by 46.5 cm each side, with room for a coffee table and side tables.
Under a bed, put the long side across the bed. A queen at 153 cm wide leaves 80 cm each side, and a king at 183 cm leaves 65 cm each side. Under a 180 x 90 cm table for six it gives 66.5 cm each end and 75 cm each side. A 240 x 100 cm table for eight leaves 36.5 cm at each end and 70 cm along each side.
Looking after your beige and brown abstract rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
