Beige Abstract Modern Rug
This beige abstract modern rug was double hand knotted in India from New Zealand wool and silk, and measures 310 x 249 cm. A worn, speckled cream ground carries overlapping rounded shapes in grey and silver, with red and rust patches that give it its strongest colour.
The design up close
Large rounded shapes overlap across the centre, with one at the top right and a stack of them running down toward the bottom left. Their edges are curves, rounded like arches, not straight lines. The cream ground is widest at the left and right edges, so the shapes sit in the middle of this beige abstract modern rug. Inside the shapes the surface is grey, silver and pale blue, with fine vertical lines running through the middle of the rug.
The strongest colour in this beige abstract modern rug sits in red and rust patches: at the top right inside one arch, down the left side of a shape, and along the bottom of the central form, where a red streak runs upward. Peach and orange flecks appear beside them. The beige ground around the shapes is speckled with white, so the surface looks weathered rather than smooth.
Indian weaving and abstract designs
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition. Indian workshops weave many designer rugs with modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes, and wool is the most common pile. Some rugs mix wool with silk, as this one does.
How it is made
Our records note vegetable dyes. This beige abstract modern rug is double hand knotted, so each knot was tied by hand on the loom. The speckled, worn look and the grey, red and cream shades are built into the knotted pile.
Sizing this beige abstract modern rug for your room
At 310 x 249 cm the rug covers about 7.7 square metres. Under a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m, it runs roughly 45 cm past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, it leaves roughly 35 cm at each end and 75 cm along each side, enough for chairs to slide back.
This rug has a cream ground that suits pale walls and timber floors, and its grey shapes sit well beside grey or charcoal furnishings.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand. Rubbing spills can dull silk, so this rug needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
