Arctic Blue Transitional Rug
This arctic blue transitional rug was hand knotted in India in wool and measures 360 x 270 cm. A grey ground carries the blue, with ice-blue and slate motifs spread across the whole field and a border of finer scrolls around it, so the rug works as one calm, tonal piece. At 9.7 square metres it is a large rug for a living room or dining room.
The design up close
Across the grey ground, pale blue flower heads sit in loose rows. A larger round rosette in a lighter blue sits in the upper part of the field, with smaller blossoms and bud shapes around it. Thin stems run through the lower field and join the motifs into one overall pattern. There is no single medallion in the centre.
A thin blue line frames the central field. Beyond it, a wider outer border carries finer grey and silver-blue scrolls, leaves and small rosettes that sit quieter than the motifs inside. Near the lower edge a few stylised figures stand among the flowers, drawn in the same pale blue.
The blue is tonal. It runs from pale ice to a deeper slate, and in places the motifs fade into the ground, so the rug reads as soft texture from across the room and as clear flowers up close.
Transitional rugs blend traditional motifs with a calmer palette. Here the flower heads and scrolls are traditional in shape, but the grey ground and one blue family make the rug suit modern furniture, pale walls and timber floors. For a room that mixes old and new, this arctic blue transitional rug works well.
Where it is made
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area in Uttar Pradesh is the largest carpet-making region in India. Wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs. Our Indian collection leans towards contemporary and designer pieces, alongside classic patterns.
How it is made
Weavers tie every knot of this arctic blue transitional rug by hand on a loom, row after row, then trim the pile level. Our records note vegetable dyes for this rug.
Sizing your arctic blue transitional rug
At 360 x 270 cm this arctic blue transitional rug covers about 9.7 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m placed on the long side leaves about 70 cm of rug showing past each end. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 60 cm at each end and 85 cm along each side, enough room for chairs to slide back. The grey ground of this blue transitional rug suits timber, concrete and pale walls.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
