Handmade Aqua and Silver Rainbow Rug
The Rock Pool rug is an aqua and silver rainbow rug, handmade in India from an 80% wool and 20% cotton blend and measuring 318 x 248 cm. That gives this aqua and silver rainbow rug an area of 7.9 square metres, which suits a large living room or an open-plan space.
The design up close
The whole rug is worked in one colour family. Deep aqua and turquoise run through the middle and lower part of the field, and the shade lightens towards the ends to sky blue, pale silver grey and ivory. The colour changes in soft horizontal bands, a little like water getting shallower, with darker teal flecks showing here and there.
Over the shading sits a fine lattice of small diamonds drawn in cream and pale blue. It is easiest to see in the lighter bands at each end, where the diamonds are clear and open. In the deeper aqua they close up into a speckled texture, so the lattice fades in and out across the rug. A cream fringe runs across each end, and there is no border.
The design is called Rainbow, and this one keeps to the blues, which makes it an easy rainbow rug to place in a room that already has a lot of pattern or colour. Pale furniture, timber floors and white walls all sit comfortably against it.
Indian weaving and this rug
India has a long rug weaving tradition, with centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile, and some rugs mix wool with other fibres, as this one does.
How this aqua and silver rainbow rug is made
This rug is handmade in India, so people made it at a loom rather than a machine. Small differences in shading from one band to the next are normal and are part of what you are buying.
The fibre is an 80% wool and 20% cotton blend. Wool is hard wearing and springy, with a matte finish, and a wool rug of this size holds up well in a main living room. Cotton is a plant fibre that is firm and holds its shape. As a modern rug, it keeps a plain room calm.
Sizing it for your room
At 318 x 248 cm, this rug is large enough for most main living rooms and open-plan spaces. Under a queen bed, which is about 153 cm wide, it leaves 47.5 cm each side, and under a king bed, about 183 cm wide, it leaves 32.5 cm each side.
Its 318 cm length also suits a three-seat sofa about 2.2 m long, which leaves 49 cm of rug beyond each end of the sofa. Under a six-seat dining table, 180 x 90 cm, it leaves 69 cm beyond the table ends and 79 cm along each side. Pulled-out chairs need at least 60 cm, so they stay on the rug.
Looking after your aqua and silver rainbow rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
