Abstract Blue Wool Silk Rug
This abstract blue wool silk rug was hand knotted in India in lamb’s wool and silk. Bright blue and navy sit beside amber and rust on a soft grey ground, so the palette runs from cool to warm across the field. The size can be confirmed in our showroom.
The design up close
The field is built from loose, irregular blocks of colour rather than a repeat or a set motif. Large blue patches sit at the top left, across the upper right and in the lower centre, and a rounded blue shape floats near the middle. Amber and ochre patches appear at the top centre and in the middle right, with a rust-orange shape near the centre-right edge.
Across this abstract blue wool silk rug, the grey ground is brushed and streaked, with plum-grey and dusty green shapes showing through between the blocks. There is no border and no corner, so the pattern runs to every edge.
Pale blues and soft greens at the lower left and lower right add cool notes, and a small amber patch at the bottom edge repeats the warm tone. Together the blocks spread the weight of colour evenly across the field, so no single corner pulls the eye away from the rest.
Indian workshops and their materials
Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh is the largest carpet-making region in India. Wool is the most common pile, and some rugs mix wool with silk, a blend used in this rug.
How this rug is made
Hand knotting builds this abstract blue wool silk rug one knot at a time on a loom. Lamb’s wool gives the pile its body, and the silk adds a soft, lustrous finish.
Sizing this abstract blue wool silk rug
The size can be confirmed in our showroom. A bold abstract blue wool silk rug suits a room with plain walls and simple furniture, where the blocks of colour carry the room. In a living room, neutral sofas and cushions let the colour do the talking. In a dining room, leave space for the chairs to slide back without catching the edge.
Warm grey walls and timber floors show off the amber and rust, while cool white walls make the blue look brighter.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. Rubbing spills can dull silk, so this rug needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
