Blue Abstract Wool Silk Rug
This blue abstract wool silk rug is a hand knotted piece made in India from wool and silk, measuring 300 x 248 cm. Sandy taupe and grey fill most of the field, and blue patches run through the centre and lower right, so the blue abstract wool silk rug reads as sand with blue washed through it.
The design up close
Mid blue patches run in long vertical streaks down the centre and across the upper half, with paler sky blue highlights among them. Seen from a distance, the streaks read as a soft wash of blue down the middle. The mid blue streaks look darker where they overlap the navy. Navy gathers in the lower right corner and along the lower edge, where the streaks are darkest.
Sandy taupe and warm beige fill the spaces between the blues, and a grey taupe tone runs down the left edge.
The brushed marks run vertically in many places, so the surface has a streaked, textured finish. The blue abstract wool silk rug has no border or repeated motif, and the pattern runs to every edge.
The top third is mostly taupe, with only a few blue flecks, so the blue builds up toward the middle and lower half.
Indian weaving and this blue abstract wool silk rug
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes.
Wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs, and some rugs mix wool with silk, as this one does. Our Indian collection leans towards contemporary and designer pieces, alongside classic patterns, in wool and wool and silk blends.
Sizing it for your room
At 300 x 248 cm the blue abstract wool silk rug covers about 7.4 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves roughly 40 cm of rug showing past each end.
For a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm leaves roughly 60 cm at each end and 79 cm along each side. A blue abstract wool silk rug of this size suits a living room with pale walls, and the taupe ground keeps a busy room calm. The rug is only about 3 m long, so a sofa and two armchairs sit close to its ends, and a coffee table in the middle works best. Our team can also help you choose a rug in a similar size and palette.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. Rubbing spills can dull silk, so it needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
