Warm Blue Ziegler Rug
This warm blue Ziegler rug was double knotted by hand in Afghanistan from wool and measures 297 x 200 cm, about 5.9 square metres. Our records note vegetable dyes. The field is a soft blue, closer to aqua than navy, and a wide cream border frames it on every side.
The design up close
A column of larger medallions runs down the centre of the field, each built from cream, tan and rust flower heads and palmettes. Smaller flower sprigs, tendrils and red accents fill the spaces between them, so the blue ground stays open and light. Medallions are spaced at regular intervals down the centre, and a smaller medallion sits on each side of the column at mid height.
Along the top and bottom ends the motifs spread further apart, which leaves more blue showing. The cream border works as a frame, so the rug has a clear edge on every side.
The border is cream, with rust and tan palmettes and flower heads set on a vine. A narrow tan band separates it from the field, so the blue does not run into the cream. A thin navy line follows the outer edge. This warm blue Ziegler rug is patterned all over, and it is one of our handmade traditional rugs that suits both classic and modern homes.
The cream border is the lightest tone on this warm blue Ziegler rug, and its palmettes carry rust and tan centres that repeat the colours of the medallions. Small flowers in the same rust and tan sit between the palmettes, so the frame and the field share one palette.
How a warm blue Ziegler rug is made
Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. This one is made from hand-spun wool, and our records note vegetable dyes. Natural dyes give the slight variations in shade that make each rug individual. A room-size rug can take a small team of weavers many months.
Sizing it for your room
At 297 x 200 cm this warm blue Ziegler rug suits a living room with a three-seat sofa. A sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 38 cm of rug showing at each end, and the front legs of two armchairs can rest on the rug around a coffee table. In a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm leaves roughly 58 cm at each end and 55 cm along each side.
A 240 x 100 cm table fits under this rug with only about 28 cm at each end, so a table of about 180 x 90 cm suits it better.
Soft blue suits cream, white and timber furnishings.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
