Vibrant Khorjin Afghan Rug
This vibrant Khorjin Afghan rug is double hand knotted in Afghanistan from lamb’s wool, and measures 502 x 84 cm. Its beige-grey base is covered in fine horizontal stripes in teal, rust, navy, orange and maroon, with diamond medallions set across the bands. Each stripe is a different width. The stripes give the rug a lively, layered look.
The design up close
Across the stripes of this vibrant Khorjin Afghan rug, some bands carry rows of small motifs in cream, teal and rust, while others are plain stripes in navy, maroon or orange. Broad bands of diamond medallions alternate with these plain stripes, so the pattern changes as you move along the runner. Maroon and navy stripes sit between the wider bands, giving the rug its striped base.
The medallions change colour from band to band. Some have a cream centre with teal or orange surrounds, and others are red with orange and cream borders. The stripes of this vibrant Khorjin Afghan rug are narrow and close, so the colours blend into one lively surface from a distance. Narrow cream and teal stripes break up the warm colours between the medallions.
Khorjin rugs and Afghan weaving
Khorjin rugs take their name from the Khorjin, the woven saddlebag of the region, and their geometric detail comes from that tradition. Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and many Afghan rugs carry bold geometric designs with a heavier, more relaxed feel. This vibrant Khorjin Afghan rug brings that colourful geometry to a long, narrow field. Traditional Khorjin pieces use reds, blues and ivory, and newer designs use brighter, multicoloured palettes, which is the family this rug belongs to.
How this vibrant Khorjin Afghan rug is made
This rug is double hand knotted, so every tuft is tied by hand on the loom and the pile is sheared level afterwards. Turn it over and the design shows on the back, with the small irregularities that come from tying each knot by hand. Our records note German dyes, and the lamb’s wool gives the pile a soft hand.
Sizing it for your hallway
At 502 x 84 cm, this vibrant Khorjin Afghan rug covers about 4.2 square metres. Its 5.02 m length suits a long hallway, a corridor or the floor beside a bed. The diamond medallions stay visible from either end of the runner. Allow about 10 to 20 cm of bare floor on each side, so a passage about 104 to 124 cm wide suits it best.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
