Tribal Hosseinabad Runner
This tribal Hosseinabad runner is hand woven in Hamadan Province in western Iran, and it measures 380 x 84 cm. Its deep red ground is covered in rows of small geometric motifs in navy, teal, cream and gold, framed by a cream guard and a dark navy border. It is a long, narrow runner, and its deep colours make it a focal point in a plain hall.
The design up close
The red field is filled with small motifs set in rows. Diamond lattices in teal and blue lines link rosettes, squares and small cross shapes in cream, blue, pink and gold, and the motifs stack into columns down the length of this tribal Hosseinabad runner.
A narrow cream band with a serrated edge runs along each side of the field. Beyond it sits a thin rust stripe, then a near black navy outer border with small rust, cream and blue flowers spaced along it.
The red ground of this tribal Hosseinabad runner is strong and even, and the teal and cream motifs keep the pattern lively from one end to the other. Because the motifs are small and repeated, the runner reads as texture from a few steps away. The motifs are arranged in a regular grid, so each column lines up with the one beside it, and the rows continue without a break along the length of the runner.
How a tribal Hosseinabad runner is made
The durability of Hosseinabad runners comes mainly from the quality of the wool and how it is spun. Hosseinabad runners are hand woven in Hamadan Province, and handmade tribal rugs of this kind suit a long, narrow format. In a passage, the deep red ground and busy motifs are easy to live with.
Colour in your room
The deep red ground is the strongest colour, and it suits rooms with cream or pale grey walls and timber floors. The navy border and teal motifs bring a cool note, so the runner also works beside blue or grey furniture.
Sizing it for your room
At 380 x 84 cm this tribal Hosseinabad runner covers about 3.2 square metres. It suits a hallway, a kitchen galley or the floor beside a bed. Allow about 10 to 20 cm of floor on each side of the runner, so a hallway of roughly 104 to 124 cm wide suits it. The 380 cm length gives a long, continuous run of pattern.
Set it along the path you walk most, so its length runs with the flow of the hall.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
