Teal Barley Twist Rug
This teal barley twist rug is hand knotted and measures 301 x 236 cm, about 7.1 square metres. Its field is a soft, mottled teal with sage and blue-green highlights, and fine darker lines run across it, so the rug reads as one calm tone from across a room.
The design of this teal barley twist rug
The pattern is made of horizontal bands. Each band carries a row of small vertical dashes and tiny stepped marks in a darker teal, and the bands sit at regular intervals down the field. Between the bands the ground is mottled, with lighter sage and blue-green streaks that make the colour look slightly uneven.
The colour stays within a narrow range: teal, blue-green and a grey sage. The darkest tone sits in the marks and the lightest in the streaks, so nothing contrasts strongly. The bands show clearly only when you look closely, and from a few metres the teal barley twist rug looks almost plain.
The rug runs to its edges, and a short fringe finishes each end. The pattern carries right up to the fringe, so there is no separate border to frame the field, and the bands continue from one short end to the other.
How it is made
The title records this rug as hand knotted. That means each knot was tied by hand on a loom, one at a time. Each knot is a separate piece of yarn, so the surface can vary slightly from one band to the next. The category places it among our contemporary pieces, and the modern bands sit comfortably with plain furniture. The pattern also shows on the reverse, which is typical of hand knotting.
If you are unsure about the materials or the make, we are happy to explain both when you visit, and we can talk through how a hand knotted piece differs from a machine made one.
Sizing it for your room
At 301 x 236 cm this teal barley twist rug covers about 7.1 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 40 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs can sit on the rug around a coffee table.
In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves about 30 cm of rug at each end and about 68 cm along each side, so chairs pulled back stay on the rug. The soft teal sits well with grey or cream walls and timber floors.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum this teal barley twist rug on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the surface. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
