Rust Zanjan Persian Rug
This rust Zanjan Persian rug is a vintage, hand knotted piece from Iran, measuring 190 x 120 cm. Its soft wool pile and earthy palette of tan, brown and rust suit timber floors and warm, neutral rooms. Our records note German dyes.
The design up close
A tall diamond medallion fills the centre of the field. Its outline is a band of dark brown with a serrated, zigzag edge, and inside it the tan ground carries small rosettes, stepped squares and angular motifs in cream, dark brown and rust. Pointed tips reach towards the top and bottom ends of the rug. The dark outline and cream motifs keep the medallion sharp against the tan field.
Around the medallion the field is busy with small flower heads, hooked shapes and little boxes, set in loose rows. Rust tones sit in the upper field and the corners, and the lower field is more camel. The border is built in two bands: an outer band of blue-grey with squared motifs in cream, rust and green, and an inner band of brown with a row of small stepped and diamond shapes. A short fringe finishes each end.
Zanjan and tribal weaving
Zanjan is a city in north-west Iran, and this rust Zanjan Persian rug is a tribal piece in that style, with bold, angular motifs repeated across the field. Every rug in this collection was hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, and a room-size piece can take a weaver many months.
How it is made
This rust Zanjan Persian rug is double hand knotted in wool. Each knot is tied by hand on the loom, row after row, which is why the edges of the motifs are never perfectly straight. Turn the rug over and you can read the design on the back, with the small irregularities that come from tying every knot by hand.
Sizing your rust Zanjan Persian rug
At 190 x 120 cm, this rust Zanjan Persian rug covers about 2.3 square metres, which makes it a smaller piece for a living room. The 190 x 120 rug suits the floor in front of an armchair, a reading corner or a spot beside a bed, where bare feet can land on it in the morning. Its length is short of a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m, so it sits best in front of a single seat.
The tan and brown field sits well with timber floors and cream or warm grey walls. Pale walls let the blue-grey border stand out. Its warm colours are strong, so it works as a focal point in a room with neutral furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
