Smoke Grey Ziegler Rug
This smoke grey Ziegler rug was hand double knotted in Afghanistan in lamb’s wool and measures 358 x 263 cm. A smoke grey field carries an all-over floral pattern in cream and sand, inside a broad pale border. At about 9.4 square metres it is a large rug for a formal living room or a dining room.
The design up close
Across the grey field, blossoms, curling leaves and palmette shapes sit on fine stems that wander between them. Each motif is drawn in cream, sand and pale tan, and they repeat in regular rows from the top to the bottom of the rug, so no single flower dominates.
The border is much paler than the field: a wide band of sand and cream with small floral scrolls in tonal shades, set inside a narrow inner guard. The border motifs are smaller than those in the field, which makes the field look like a panel set into a frame.
Some flowers are open and round, while others are tipped or half turned, and their outlines soften into the grey. From across a room this smoke grey Ziegler rug reads as texture and not as contrast. Grey ground shows between the larger blossoms, and smaller leaves fill the gaps around them.
Ziegler design and Afghan weaving
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. This rug uses hand spun lamb’s wool and an all-over floral design, so the pattern looks even from every side of the room and does not focus on a centre.
How the smoke grey Ziegler rug is made
This smoke grey Ziegler rug is hand double knotted, with each knot wrapped around two warp threads and tied by hand. Our records note vegetable dyes. Because each motif is formed from individual knots, the flowers are part of the pile and not printed on it.
Sizing a smoke grey Ziegler rug in your home
At 358 x 263 cm the rug covers about 9.4 square metres. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, it leaves roughly 59 cm at each end and 82 cm along each side, enough room for chairs to slide back. In a living room, a three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 69 cm of rug showing past each end, so the sofa sits well inside the edge of the field. A coffee table, two armchairs and a sofa can all sit on the field at once.
Looking after your smoke grey Ziegler rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
