Sky Blue Medallion Kazak Rug
This sky blue medallion Kazak rug is hand knotted in Afghanistan in lamb wool and measures 296 x 186 cm. Three large medallions stack down the centre of a sky blue field, and a red border with cream and gold motifs frames the whole rug. It covers about 5.5 square metres.
The design up close
This sky blue medallion Kazak rug centres on three medallions, one above another. The top and bottom ones have navy outer panels around a cream square, with a red star at the centre. The middle medallion is red, edged in cream and gold, with a navy diamond at its heart. Each one is framed by a stepped key border.
Between the medallions and down both sides of the field sit small angular motifs in red, cream and navy. Some are diamonds and others hang like pendants, and they break up the soft blue ground without crowding it. The blue is slightly greyed, which lets the red and navy stand out.
The border is a wide red band filled with cream and orange-gold star and cross motifs, with narrow guard stripes running beside it. A second red edge repeats the same motifs, so the frame feels busy up close and calm from a distance.
Kazak rugs and where they come from
The name comes from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory. In recent decades, weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan have revived these designs, so the old patterns live on in new rugs.
Our Kazak rugs are hand knotted in Afghanistan, and this sky blue medallion Kazak rug follows that tradition with its large medallions and geometric borders.
How this sky blue medallion Kazak rug is made
Weavers tie every knot by hand on a loom, row after row, then shear the pile level. Hand knotting leaves small irregularities that show the handwork. The busy geometric pattern hides everyday wear, which suits family rooms and entrances.
Sizing it for your room
At 296 x 186 cm this sky blue medallion Kazak rug covers about 5.5 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 38 cm of rug showing past each end. Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm it leaves roughly 58 cm at each end and 48 cm along each side.
This sky blue medallion Kazak rug suits pale timber, white or cream walls and neutral furniture, and the red border can pick up cushions or a lamp.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
