Sea Green Kazak Rug
This sea green Kazak rug is a double hand knotted piece made in Afghanistan, measuring 118 x 82 cm, or about 1.0 square metre. Its deep green field and red and cream borders make it a bright, warm rug for a small space. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The design up close
Three diamond medallions stack down the centre of the deep green field. The top and bottom medallions have orange centres edged in blue and cream, with a blue vertical stem through the middle, while the middle one is cream with a red central motif outlined in navy.
Between the medallions, small red rosettes sit on the green ground at each side, and red and cream hooked motifs fill the gaps near the edges. Each medallion has a stepped, zigzag outline in blue, cream and orange, so the shapes read clearly from across the room.
The outer border of this sea green Kazak rug is a red band with a wider cream band inside it. The cream band is filled with small red and navy cross-shaped motifs in rows, and a thin orange guard line separates the border from the green field.
Kazak rugs and Afghan weaving
Kazak rugs revive the bold geometric designs first woven in the Caucasus. The name comes from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, where weavers made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large medallions, stars and hooked motifs. Afghan weavers have since taken up these designs, and Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time.
How it is made
This sea green Kazak rug is double hand knotted in lamb’s wool, so each knot is tied by hand on the loom. Lamb’s wool gives the pile a soft feel. Turn the rug over and you can read the design on the back, with the small irregularities that come from tying every knot by hand. The cream band and red border give the rug a framed look.
Sizing your sea green Kazak rug
At 118 x 82 cm this sea green Kazak rug covers about 1.0 square metre, which makes it a small accent piece. It suits the floor beside a bed, an entrance or the space in front of a desk chair. A queen bed is 153 cm wide, so a rug this size can sit beside one with bare feet landing on the green.
Its deep green field is a clear focal point against cream or pale grey floors, and the cream border picks up pale tones from linen or cushions.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
