Green Allover Waziri Rug
This green allover Waziri rug was double hand knotted in Afghanistan from wool and measures 199 x 155 cm. Twelve octagonal medallions sit in four rows across a sand and taupe ground, each filled with red, teal, cream and ochre motifs. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The design up close
The ground is a warm sand taupe, and the medallions sit in a regular grid of three columns. Each octagon carries a central star or lozenge in red or cream, surrounded by hooked and angular shapes in teal, pink, ochre and deep red. The colours change from one octagon to the next, though the layout repeats exactly.
Between the medallions, small diamond and cross shapes in teal, red and cream repeat in staggered rows. A narrow border of small red and cream motifs runs round the edge, with a thin teal line inside it. The field is busy but orderly, and the sand ground keeps the bright colours from clashing.
Green shows only as teal inside the medallions, so the overall look is warm sand with bright accents. This green allover Waziri rug reads as a neutral from across a room and comes forward only when you look closely at the octagons.

It is too short to sit under a three-seat sofa with the front legs resting on it, so it suits a bedroom, a study or a small living room with two armchairs and a side table. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
