Rust Shiraz Persian Rug
This rust Shiraz Persian rug is a hand knotted piece from Iran, made in lamb’s wool and measuring 160 x 92 cm. Its warm red field, cream medallions and navy side panels give it a bold, traditional look. Our records note German dyes.
The design up close
Two cream medallions stack down the centre of the red field, one near the top and one near the bottom. Each is shield shaped, with orange, navy and green motifs arranged around a small tree-like form. Between them a green and red lozenge with pale blue detail links the two, and a navy arch sits at the top end with a cream and red pattern inside it.
Small square motifs in navy and cream run along the field, and a pair of rosettes with green leaves sits beside each medallion. The long side panels are navy, filled with a fine dotted pattern in cream and blue, and a row of small stepped marks runs along each edge of the field.
The outer border is cream with small geometric motifs in orange, navy, green and red, and a thin red and navy guard stripe sits inside it. The motifs repeat in small diamonds and stylised flowers, and the cream ground keeps the border light against the deep field.
Shiraz and its rugs
Shiraz is a city in Iran’s Fars province, and this rust Shiraz Persian rug is a tribal style piece. Every rug in this collection was hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, and a larger piece can take a weaver many months, which is why no two are quite alike.
How it is made
This rust Shiraz Persian rug is hand knotted in lamb’s wool. Each knot is tied by hand on the loom, row after row, and the pile is then trimmed level. Turn the rug over and you can read the design on the back, with the small irregularities that come from tying every knot by hand.
Sizing your rust Shiraz Persian rug
At 160 x 92 cm this rust Shiraz Persian rug covers about 1.5 square metres, so it suits a bedside, a reading corner or the space in front of a single armchair. The 160 x 92 rug is also a practical size for a bedroom, where it sits beside a queen bed (153 cm wide) and gives bare feet a soft landing.
Its warm colours are strong, so it works well as a focal point in a room with neutral furniture and pale walls. The navy panels pick up dark tones from curtains or cushions.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
