Rust Qum Vintage Persian Rug
This rust Qum vintage Persian rug is a super fine, hand knotted piece from Iran, measuring 340 x 239 cm, or about 8.1 square metres. Its rust-red field and cream corners sit inside a pale blue-grey border, and the pile is made of lamb’s wool. Our records note German dyes.
The design up close
A cream lozenge medallion sits at the centre of the field, with pale blue-green and gold detail inside it and a dark outline around its edge. Above and below it, smaller cream and red pendants link the medallion to the cusped ends of the field, where the outline rises in rounded lobes.
Between the medallion and the edges, the rust ground is covered in fine flowers, vines and leaves in cream, blue, gold and green. The cream corners hold their own floral sprays, so the design stays busy from the centre out to the border. Across the field, the pattern is fine and evenly spread.
The border has two bands. The outer band is pale blue-grey with floral medallions in gold, cream and rust, and the inner band is cream with fine vine scrolls. Thin dark stripes separate the two bands, and a short fringe finishes each end.
Qum and Persian weaving
Qum is the city that gives this rug its name, and every rug in this collection was hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool and sometimes silk, and a room-size piece can take a weaver many months. At 8.1 square metres, this rust Qum vintage Persian rug is a room-size piece. Vintage rugs like this one have a softer, settled palette than new pieces.
How it is made
This rust Qum vintage Persian rug is double hand knotted, so each knot is tied by hand on the loom. Lamb’s wool gives the pile a soft feel, and turning the rug over shows the same design on the back, with the small irregularities that only hand knotting leaves.
Sizing your rust Qum vintage Persian rug
At 340 x 239 cm this rust Qum vintage Persian rug is large enough for a full lounge setting. With a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m, roughly 60 cm of rug shows past each end, and the front legs of two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
For a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves roughly 50 cm at each end and about 70 cm along each side, enough room for the chairs to slide back. Its cream corners and blue-grey border suit pale walls and timber floors.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
