Rust and Cream Chobi Runner
This rust and cream Chobi runner is a hand knotted wool runner measuring 341 x 81 cm, made in Afghanistan. Cream and ivory palmettes and flower heads are set in columns on a rust field, with a wide cream border along each side. The soft colours give it a calm look that suits classic and contemporary furniture alike.
The design up close
A large floral medallion sits in the middle of the rust field, cream and sage in colour with a darker centre. Above and below it, pairs of round blossoms and smaller flower heads repeat in columns, and fine cream vine lines wind between them. Near the top end the field carries a row of cream and sage flower heads, and near the bottom a band of cream motifs closes the design.
The wide border is cream and pale yellow, with small rust and sage motifs set in rows. A thin rust guard runs along the outer edge. The cream border frames the field on both sides, so the rust centre reads as a single panel. Overall, this rust and cream Chobi runner repeats the same palmette and flower from one end to the other, so the pattern reads as calm texture from a distance.
Chobi colours and Ziegler designs
Many Chobi rugs follow Ziegler designs: soft-toned, large-scale designs first made from the 1880s for European and American buyers. Chobi rugs often come in ivory, sand, soft green, rust and blue. This runner uses three of those colours on its rust field, and its large-scale floral motifs match the Ziegler description. Designs like this one suit a warm room, where the rust and cream sit comfortably beside timber furniture.
How it is made
This rust and cream Chobi runner is hand knotted, so each knot is tied by hand on a loom, row after row. The pile is wool, which is soft and resilient, so the surface holds up to daily use on a hallway floor.
Sizing a rust and cream Chobi runner
At 341 x 81 cm this rust and cream Chobi runner covers about 2.8 square metres. Its width suits a hallway about 101 to 121 cm wide, which leaves 10 to 20 cm of floor on each side. Its length suits a long hallway or a kitchen galley, and beside a bed it runs along one side of the room.
In a living room, a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 60 cm of rug showing past each end. Against timber floors and cream walls this rust and cream Chobi runner gives a warm line of colour, and the cream border keeps the edges light. Lay it so that its ends sit clear of doorways.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
