Ruby Red Jaldar Runner
This ruby red Jaldar runner is made in Pakistan from handspun New Zealand wool and measures 299 x 76 cm, about 2.3 square metres. Our records note vegetable dyes. A deep red field carries a single column of cream diamond motifs from one end to the other, framed by a wide black and cream border.
The design up close
Each diamond in the column is cream and sand, outlined in dark grey, and the motifs repeat at regular intervals from one end of the ruby red Jaldar runner to the other. The red around them is solid and even, so the diamonds carry all the detail.
Angular cream and black points sit on either side of each diamond, pointing into the red and creating a zigzag edge along both long sides of the field. Between them the red is plain, so the eye travels down the length of the runner.
The border is wide and busy. Its outer band repeats small square-grid motifs in black and cream on grey, and narrow stripes run along each long edge. The black in the border is the darkest tone on the rug, which frames the red and stops it looking too bright in a narrow space. At the short ends, plain stripes in red, cream and dark grey finish the runner, with a fringe along the end.
Jaldar and Pakistani weaving
Pakistan is known for wool rugs in classic designs such as Bokhara and Jaldar, with rich reds and repeating motifs that suit traditional and modern rooms alike. Rug making grew quickly in Pakistan after independence in 1947, with Lahore among the early centres.
A Jaldar rug is built from angular, diamond shaped motifs, which sets it apart from the octagonal guls of a Bokhara. This ruby red Jaldar runner shows that diamond form clearly down its centre.
Jaldar and Bokhara designs share a red ground and a repeating layout, so the two are easy to confuse. The shape of the motif is the surest guide, and the diamonds in this runner are angular rather than round.
Sizing this ruby red Jaldar runner for your hallway
At 299 x 76 cm this runner covers about 2.3 square metres and is about three metres long, so it suits a hallway of roughly that length. A hallway about 96 to 116 cm wide leaves 10 to 20 cm of floor showing on each side of the runner.
This Jaldar rug in runner form also works beside a bed or along a kitchen galley, where its red brings colour to a plain floor. Red and cream sit well with timber boards and pale walls.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
