Royal Blue Pure Silk Rug
This royal blue pure silk rug is hand double knotted from pure silk and measures 301 x 196 cm, or about 5.9 square metres. Its field is ivory, and the blue shows in the slate outer border and in the muted blue-grey medallion at the centre. It is a Persian rug with a fine floral medallion design, made in Iran.
The design up close
A medallion in mauve-grey and dusky blue sits at the centre of the ivory field, with a cream and grey-blue inner ring. Fine floral scrolls fill the field around it in rust, sand and grey, so the ground looks textured rather than plain. Pale blue and grey motifs sit in each corner of this royal blue pure silk rug, echoing the centre. The colours are muted throughout, and the medallion holds the eye at the middle of the room.
A rust-brown band with cream scrolls runs round the field, followed by a slate blue-grey outer border with a dense, repeating floral vine. A cream fringe finishes the ends. Silk gives the surface a fine sheen that catches the light as you walk past this royal blue pure silk rug.
Persian rugs and silk
Every rug in this collection is hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool and sometimes silk, which is why no two are alike. Wool is soft, resilient and easy to live with, while silk adds sheen and fine detail, as it does in this royal blue pure silk rug.
How this royal blue pure silk rug is made
This royal blue pure silk rug is hand double knotted, so each knot is tied by hand and secured around two warp threads. Silk is finer than wool, which lets the medallion and border scrolls be drawn with sharp edges. The pile is trimmed level after knotting, and the blue and rust tones are set into the surface knot by knot.
Sizing it for your room
At 301 x 196 cm, this royal blue pure silk rug covers about 5.9 square metres. In a lounge, a three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 40 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs facing it can rest their front legs on the rug. Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, it leaves roughly 60 cm at each end and about 53 cm along each side. Its ivory ground suits pale walls and cool grey furniture, and the blue-grey border picks up navy or slate cushions.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then. For a silk rug, remember that rubbing spills can dull silk, so it needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand.
