Red Vintage Sarouq Rug
This red vintage Sarouq rug was double hand knotted in Iran from wool and measures 425 x 318 cm, which is about 13.5 square metres. Our records note vegetable dyes. The rug may already have found a home, but its design and size are worth knowing if you are looking for something similar.

The red field is a deep brick red, with a large central medallion in sage green and cream. The medallion has a lobed outline, with pendant shapes above and below it, and the corners of the field hold cream and sage cartouches with small blossoms.
Blue and cream flowers and curling vines fill the space between the medallion and the border. A navy band with cream and rust floral cartouches frames the field, and outer rust and cream bands finish the edge.
Persian rugs and where they are made
Every rug in this collection was hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool and sometimes silk, and a room-size piece can take a weaver many months.5 square metres is a large piece to make by hand.
How it is made
This rug is double hand knotted, and our records note vegetable dyes for its wool. Vintage rugs carry the marks of their age in the colour and the pile, so a piece like this one is best judged in person rather than from a photograph.
The pendant shapes and corner cartouches sit within the same red field as the medallion, so the design reads as one layout from the centre out to the border.
Sizing it for your room
At 425 x 318 cm, a red vintage Sarouq rug of this size covers about 13.5 square metres, which makes it a room-size piece. Under a 2.2 m three-seat sofa it leaves about 103 cm of rug showing past each end, so a whole sofa and two armchairs can sit on it around a coffee table.
In a dining room, a table of 240 x 100 cm for eight leaves about 93 cm at each end and 109 cm along each side. A 180 x 90 cm table for six leaves about 123 cm at each end and 114 cm along each side. Its red and sage palette suits a formal dining room.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
