Red Vintage Ghadim Rug
This red vintage Ghadim rug is a Persian rug hand double knotted from pure lamb’s wool in Iran. It measures 340 x 257 cm, or about 8.7 square metres, and its faded red field and cream central medallion give it a soft, worn-in look that suits a settled room.
The design of this red vintage Ghadim rug
A cream medallion fills the centre of the red field. Its middle is a small star with a dark centre and tan points, and the pale lobes around it spread toward the edges. Cream and sage motifs fill the corners, and pointed, leaf-like shapes sit along the sides of the field in faded grey-green.
The outer border is cream and grey-green, with small repeated motifs running along its length. A narrower band in red-brown and tan frames the field, so the eye moves from the pale edge toward the red centre. Wear shows as lighter, softer patches across the field, and that is a large part of the rug’s vintage, distressed look.
Tabriz weaving and the Ghadim name
This red vintage Ghadim rug carries the name Ghadim Tabriz. Tabriz is a city in north-west Iran and one of the best-known weaving centres in the country, admired for fine knotting and detailed medallion and floral designs. The central medallion and floral field follow that tradition.
Vintage rugs carry the marks of years of use. On this one, age and wear have softened the outlines of the motifs, so the drawing looks gentle and blurred rather than crisp.
How it is made
Each knot in a Persian rug is tied by hand on a loom, one at a time, and a rug of this size takes a weaver many months. This one is hand double knotted from pure lamb’s wool, so every part of the pattern is built up knot by knot.
Wear has thinned the pile in places. Lift this red vintage Ghadim rug rather than dragging it when you move furniture, so the worn areas are not pulled further.
Sizing it for your room
At 340 x 257 cm this red vintage Ghadim rug covers about 8.7 square metres, which is a good size for a large living room. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 60 cm of rug showing past each end. Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, the rug leaves roughly 80 cm at each end and about 83 cm along each side.
The faded red and cream palette suits rooms with pale walls, timber floors, or soft grey and tan furnishings, where the rug can act as the warm centre of the room.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
