Red Traditional Beljik Rug
This red traditional beljik rug was double hand knotted in Afghanistan from lamb’s wool. It measures 226 x 173 cm, or about 3.9 square metres, and sits in our traditional range of Afghan rugs. The field is a deep carmine red, with navy figures set in rows across it, and the overall look is traditional.
The design up close
Navy-outlined medallions run in rows down the length of this red traditional beljik rug, each with a dark centre and small geometric panels around it. The medallions sit close together, so the red ground shows only in narrow lines between them. Smaller navy motifs fill the gaps, and the figures repeat in the same order from top to bottom. Because the rows are so even, the rug looks orderly from a distance and still rewards a closer look at the individual figures.
The border is dark red edged with navy. Along the sides, small navy motifs repeat in a fine line, and the bottom border carries a row of small repeated figures. The border is darker than the field, which frames the medallions without competing with them.
Afghan rugs and their designs
Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. They more often carry bold geometric and tribal designs and a heavier, more relaxed feel than the curving patterns of many other rugs, and this red traditional beljik rug follows that style. Their thick wool and patterned fields hide everyday wear, so they suit family rooms, entrances, hallways and dining rooms.
How it is made
This red traditional beljik rug is double hand knotted and made from lamb’s wool. The navy figures and the red ground are both set knot by knot on the loom, which is why every medallion is built by hand rather than printed. This red traditional beljik rug suits a room where a traditional pattern is the main feature.
Sizing this red traditional beljik rug in your room
At 226 x 173 cm the rug covers about 3.9 square metres. Its length is just over 2.2 m, so a sofa of around 2.2 m can rest its front legs on it, and two armchairs can do the same around a coffee table. In a dining room it suits a table of about 180 x 90 cm, leaving 23 cm of rug past each end and 41.5 cm along each side. Lay it where the navy figures can be seen clearly from the seating.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
