Red Tabriz Ziba Rug
This red Tabriz Ziba rug was hand knotted in Iran in wool and measures 300 x 202 cm, or about 6.1 square metres. A deep red field holds a round medallion in ivory, blue and gold at the centre, with paisley shapes in the corners. A cream band and a navy border with flower sprigs frame this red tabriz ziba rug.
The design up close
The medallion sits at the centre, built from rings of ivory, blue and rust around a small gold and red quatrefoil. Pale gold and green pendants reach out from its top and bottom edges, and the ivory ring is the lightest area of the field.
Around the medallion the red field is filled with flowers, leaves and curling stems in cream, green, gold and blue. At each corner a paisley shape in gold, green and cream points inward, and the field is framed by a cream band with small floral sprigs.
The outer border is a navy band with flower sprigs in pink, cream, blue and red, set between thin guard lines in gold and red. This red Tabriz Ziba rug shows the layered build of a classic Tabriz design, with the medallion, paisley corners and border each working as separate layers.
Tabriz, in north-west Iran
Tabriz, in north-west Iran, has been a centre of rug weaving for centuries, and its workshops are known for fine knotting and an enormous range of designs, from classic central medallions to all-over floral patterns. Among our handmade traditional rugs, this piece keeps the medallion layout and the floral field the city is known for.
How it is made
Every Tabriz rug here is hand knotted in Iran. Since the mid 19th century, Tabriz weavers have tied the symmetrical (Turkish) knot, often with a small hooked knife, which gives a firm, even surface. This red Tabriz Ziba rug has a wool pile, and it is one of our handmade traditional rugs, with each knot tied by hand on the loom.
Sizing a red Tabriz Ziba rug for your room
At 300 x 202 cm the rug covers about 6.1 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m sits along its length with roughly 40 cm of rug showing past each end. In a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm (six seats) leaves 60 cm of rug at each end and 56 cm along each long side, so chairs can be pulled back and stay on the rug.
The red suits warm timber and cream or grey walls, and the cream band brings light to the edges of the rug.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
