Red Tabriz Sogol Rug
This red Tabriz Sogol rug is a 285 x 205 cm piece, hand knotted in Iran from wool. A red field carries curving floral vines and paisley-like blossoms in blue, cream, purple and green, around a cream medallion at the centre. The overall effect is rich and warm.
The design up close
The centre medallion of this red Tabriz Sogol rug is cream, with a red centre and a navy diamond at its core. Small flowers in many colours edge its outline, so it stands out clearly against the red ground. The corners are cream and ivory with purple and navy grounds, and large curved, paisley-like flowers reach into the field from them.
Across the red field, curving vines carry blossoms in blue, cream, purple, green and gold. The vines are thin and flowing, which gives the field movement from one end to the other.
The main border is navy, with a row of small flowers in red, yellow, cream and blue running along it. A narrow edge of red and cream finishes the outside of the rug.
Where this red Tabriz Sogol rug comes from
Tabriz rugs come from Tabriz in north-west Iran, one of the best-known weaving centres in the country. Tabriz weavers have tied the symmetrical (Turkish) knot since the mid 19th century, and the pile is wool, sometimes with silk highlights in finer pieces, on a cotton or silk foundation. Tabriz workshops are known for central medallions, all-over floral patterns and garden scenes, and this rug uses the central medallion.
Persian rugs are hand knotted in Iran, one knot at a time on a loom. Wool is soft, resilient and easy to live with, while silk adds sheen and fine detail.
Colour on this red Tabriz Sogol rug
Red is the main colour and covers most of the field. Cream fills the medallion and corners, and navy and purple give the border and corners depth. Blue, green and gold appear in the flowers, so the colours stay bright without being loud.
A red Tabriz Sogol rug suits rooms with cream or grey walls, dark timber and plain upholstery, where the medallion can sit at the centre of the room.
Sizing it for your room
At 285 x 205 cm the rug covers about 5.8 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 33 cm of rug showing past each end, enough for the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs to rest on the rug around a coffee table. Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, a red Tabriz Sogol rug this size leaves roughly 53 cm at each end and 58 cm along each side.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
