Red Tabriz Persian Runner
This red Tabriz Persian runner is a long, hand knotted wool runner measuring 445 x 80 cm. Its field is a deep red worked with three navy medallions set one above another, and its border is cream and navy with stepped motifs along each side. It is a Persian rug from Iran, in the Tabriz style.
The design up close
Three large medallions stand in a line down the length of the field. Each one has a navy diamond outlined in cream and green, with a smaller cream diamond at its heart and gold rosettes in the corners. A vertical band of stripes runs through the middle of every medallion, so the three shapes read like links in a chain from one end of the runner to the other.
Between the medallions the red ground is filled with small blossoms in cream, blue and gold, joined by fine green stems. Pairs of diagonal bars in red, cream and navy sit beside each medallion and angle toward the ends. The navy and red contrast gives the runner a bold look that carries well down a long hallway.
The outer border is built from narrow navy and cream stripes, with a wider band of stepped cream and navy triangles along each long side. Small green and gold rosettes sit inside the triangles. Seen as a whole, this red Tabriz Persian runner is built on repetition, with the same medallion, stripe and triangle running from one end to the other.
Tabriz and its weaving
Tabriz, in north-west Iran, has been a centre of rug weaving for centuries, and its workshops are known for fine knotting and an enormous range of designs, from classic central medallions to all-over floral patterns. The quality of a Tabriz rug is often described by its raj, a count of knots over a set length of about seven centimetres. The higher the raj, the finer the detail, and a finer rug takes many more months on the loom.
How it is made
Our records note that this red Tabriz Persian runner is hand double knotted. Each knot is tied by hand on the loom, row after row. Tabriz weavers have tied the symmetrical (Turkish) knot since the mid 19th century, often with a small hooked knife, which gives a firm, even surface.
Sizing a red Tabriz Persian runner
At 445 x 80 cm this red Tabriz Persian runner covers about 3.6 square metres. Its width suits a hallway about 100 to 120 cm wide, which leaves a margin of bare floor on each side. Its length also suits a kitchen galley or a spot beside a bed, where it runs along one side of the room.
Against pale walls and timber floors this red Tabriz Persian runner stands out clearly, and the navy medallions give a plain space some depth.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
