Red Tabriz Persian Runner
This red Tabriz Persian runner is woven in Iran and measures 317 x 70 cm, about 2.2 square metres. Its deep red ground is covered from end to end with an all-over pattern of flowers, leaves and curving vines.
The design up close
Large rosettes are set at intervals along the runner, each with a cream or gold centre and petals in green, blue and rose. Between them smaller flower heads, leaves and curling stems fill the red ground, and some of the stems end in curving gold shapes. Nothing sits in a rigid row, so the pattern feels loose and full rather than formal.
Cream, gold, blue and green appear on the red in small amounts, so the red reads as the main colour from across a hallway, and the lighter tones show up as you walk along the runner. This red Tabriz Persian runner has a pattern that runs right up to both ends. Looking along its length, the rosettes come round at a steady rhythm, so the runner has a sense of movement without any single motif taking over.
Tabriz weaving and this runner
Tabriz, in north-west Iran, has been a centre of rug weaving for centuries, and its workshops are known for fine knotting and an enormous range of designs, from classic central medallions to all-over floral patterns. This red Tabriz Persian runner follows the all-over floral style. Tabriz weavers have tied the symmetrical (Turkish) knot since the mid 19th century, often with a small hooked knife, which gives a firm, even surface.
Every Persian rug in our collection is hand knotted in Iran. A red Tabriz Persian runner is made one knot at a time on a loom, the same way as the larger pieces in the collection. The knots are tied across the width of the runner, so the design is built up row after row from one end to the other.
Sizing this red Tabriz Persian runner
At 317 x 70 cm this runner suits a hallway, a kitchen galley or the floor beside a bed. In a hallway, allow a floor width of about 90 to 110 cm, which is the runner’s 70 cm plus 10 to 20 cm of bare floor on each side. Beside a queen bed, which is 153 cm wide in Australia, it can run along one side with its 70 cm width reaching toward the frame.
For a kitchen galley, this red Tabriz Persian runner follows the walkway between the benches and leaves the floor clear at both ends. Along a run of benches, the length of the runner does most of the work, so the eye follows the red pattern down the room.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
