The field is a deep red with a central blue medallion. The medallion is lobed and built in layers of navy, blue and cream, with a small floral centre, and pendants reach out from its top and bottom.
Across the red ground, curling vines carry small flowers and paisley-like shapes in red, cream, green and blue. The corners are cream and pale blue with floral vines, and a thin cream line separates them from the field.
The border is navy, with floral rosettes and palmettes in cream, gold, blue and red. A narrow cream band sits inside it, between the border and the field.
Tabriz rugs and their raj
Tabriz, in north-west Iran, has been a centre of rug weaving for centuries. The quality of a Tabriz rug is often described by its raj, a count of knots over a set length of about seven centimetres: the higher the raj, the finer the detail. This red Tabriz Persian rug is listed at 40 raj.
Since the mid 19th century, Tabriz weavers have tied the symmetrical (Turkish) knot, often with a small hooked knife, which gives a firm, even surface. They usually use a wool pile, sometimes with silk highlights in finer pieces, on a cotton or silk foundation.
How it is made
Every Tabriz rug here is hand knotted in Iran, and this red Tabriz Persian rug follows the same workshop tradition of fine knotting and detailed medallion designs.
The field shows a steady, even red from edge to edge, with the blue medallion sitting on the centre line. The pendants above and below it are matched in size, and the vines have crisp outlines, which is typical of fine Tabriz knotting.
Sizing it for your room
At 293 x 208 cm, this red Tabriz Persian rug covers about 6.1 square metres. Under a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m, it runs about 37 cm past each end, so the front legs of the sofa can rest on it.
A red Tabriz Persian rug this size suits a living room with a sofa and armchairs, where the blue medallion becomes the focal point of the room.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
