Red Tabriz Mahitejar Rug
This red Tabriz Mahitejar rug is a 301 x 200 cm Persian rug, hand knotted in Iran from wool. A deep red field is covered with small repeating motifs, with a cream and navy medallion at the centre and plum corner pieces that frame it. The rug is rich in colour and built on a classic layout of medallion, field and borders.
The design up close
The field of this red Tabriz Mahitejar rug is a dense, even carpet of small motifs in rust, navy and gold, set on a deep red ground. Each motif is small enough that the field reads as texture from a distance, and the repeat is regular enough that the eye follows it across the rug.
The central medallion is cream and ivory with a lobed outline. It is edged by a navy and plum surround with fine detail, and four corner pieces in plum each hold cream triangles in the outer corner. Those corners link the medallion to the edges, so the centre stands out clearly from the red field.
The border has several bands. The outer band is navy and plum, with cream vines and small red shapes, bordered by thin gold lines. Inside it, a band with small repeated motifs frames the field, so the border adds a lot of detail around the edge.
Where this red Tabriz Mahitejar rug comes from
Persian rugs like this one are hand knotted in Iran, one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool and sometimes silk. Tabriz rugs come from Tabriz in north-west Iran, one of the best-known weaving centres in the country. They are known for fine knotting and detailed medallion and floral designs, and this rug follows the medallion layout. Wool is soft, resilient and easy to live with.
Colour on this red Tabriz Mahitejar rug
Deep red is the main colour, with rust and gold in the field and cream in the medallion. Navy and plum give the corners and border depth, and blue-grey adds a cool note in the outer stripes. The palette is warm and rich, and the cream medallion gives the lightest point on the rug.
A red Tabriz Mahitejar rug suits rooms with cream or grey walls and dark timber, because the red picks up cushions and curtains.
Sizing it for your room
At 301 x 200 cm the rug covers about 6.0 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 41 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs can rest their front legs on it beside a coffee table. Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, a red Tabriz Mahitejar rug this size leaves roughly 61 cm at each end and 55 cm along each side, enough for chairs to slide back.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
