Red Tabriz Goli Rug
This red Tabriz goli rug is a hand knotted rug made in Iran from wool. At 340 x 260 cm it covers about 8.8 square metres, with a red field, a navy and cream medallion at the centre and a wide navy border. It is a traditional piece in shades of red, navy blue, cream and gold.
The design up close
The red field is filled with small flowers and curling stems in cream, blue, green and yellow, set close together so the ground looks lively from a short distance. Small flowers repeat across the whole field, so the pattern holds together from the corners to the centre. At the centre, a diamond shaped medallion in cream and navy has a red core and a lobed outline of blue leaves. Smaller navy flower clusters sit around it and draw the eye to the middle of the rug.
On this red Tabriz goli rug, the four corners are cream spandrels with blue and gold scrolls, which cut the red field into an octagonal shape. Each spandrel holds a small blue flower with curling gold leaves, and the cream stands out against the red.
The border is wide and navy, with a band of cream and gold vine and floral scrolls running along it. Thin gold guard stripes separate the border from the field, and a narrow gold line runs along the outer edge. The navy frame sits cool against the warm red field.
How it is made
Our records note hand knotting for this red Tabriz goli rug. It is made in Iran from wool, and the quality of a rug like this depends on the wool, the colours, the design and how fine the knotting is.
Sizing this red Tabriz goli rug for your room
At 340 x 260 cm this red Tabriz goli rug covers about 8.8 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 60 cm of rug past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves 50 cm at each end and 80 cm along each side. A 340 x 260 rug suits a formal living room or a large family room.
Pale walls and timber floors let the red field and navy border stand out. Because the medallion sits at the centre, set the rug so its middle falls under the coffee table or dining table, not off to one side.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
