Red Tabriz Gol Darbar Rug
This red Tabriz Gol Darbar rug has a wool pile and measures 412 x 297 cm, or about 12.2 square metres. Its deep red field is covered in an all-over pattern of flowers and vines in cream, gold, blue and green, with no central medallion. A narrow ivory guard band and a wide navy border frame the field, and the border carries large rosettes in gold, cream and red.
The design up close
Nothing in the field is set apart as a centre piece. Instead, curling stems, paisley shaped leaves and flower heads in cream, gold, blue, green and rust spread evenly across the red ground, with small branching vines linking them.
Larger flower heads in gold, cream and blue are scattered through the field. For anyone comparing handmade traditional rugs, this even spread is the clearest feature to look for. This red Tabriz Gol Darbar rug has an even pattern from edge to edge.
A narrow ivory band with a small dark pattern runs round the field, then a wide navy border carries flowers and rosettes in gold, cream, red and green. The outer edge is navy.
On this red Tabriz Gol Darbar rug, teal and blue leaves are scattered among the flower heads, which keeps the red from looking flat. The rosettes in the navy border are evenly spaced, and many have a pale cream centre.
Colour and where it sits
The red ground of this red Tabriz Gol Darbar rug covers most of the piece, so it reads as warm from across the room. Navy in the border and blue in the vines bring cooler tones in, while gold and cream carry the light detail. Seen from across a room, the rug reads as one warm red field with the flowers scattered over it. Among our handmade traditional rugs, this red piece balances warm and cool tones.
Sizing a red Tabriz Gol Darbar rug for your room
At 412 x 297 cm the rug covers about 12.2 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m sits along its length with roughly 96 cm of rug showing past each end. In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm (eight seats) leaves 86 cm of rug at each end and 98.5 cm along each long side, so chairs can be pulled out and stay on the rug.
The strong red suits timber floors and cream or grey walls.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
