Red Tabriz Broken Branch Rug
This red Tabriz broken branch rug is a hand knotted Persian rug made in Iran from wool. At 340 x 250 cm it covers about 8.5 square metres, with a red field, a cream medallion at the centre and a wide navy border. It is a traditional piece in red and navy.
The design up close
The red field is covered edge to edge with small floral motifs in green, blue, cream and navy, so the ground looks busy and rich from a short distance. At the centre sits a cream medallion with a red and blue core, outlined by a ring of small blue and green flowers. Pale cream spandrels fill the four corners, each with a pink and red floral motif on an ivory ground. The cream of the medallion and spandrels repeats around the field, so the eye travels from the centre to the corners.
The border is wide and navy, with a band of cream and red floral vine running along its inner edge. Two thin guard stripes, one cream and one red, separate it from the field, and the outermost edge is a narrow stripe of small repeating motifs. The navy ground makes the red field of this red Tabriz broken branch rug stand out.
Where this red Tabriz broken branch rug comes from
Tabriz, in north-west Iran, has been a centre of rug weaving for centuries, and its workshops are known for fine knotting and an enormous range of designs, from classic central medallions to all-over floral patterns. This red Tabriz broken branch rug follows that tradition with a central medallion over a floral field. Since the mid 19th century, Tabriz weavers have tied the symmetrical (Turkish) knot, which gives a firm, even surface. Our records note hand knotting for this rug, which is made from wool.
A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool and sometimes silk. A room-size piece can take a weaver many months.
Sizing this red Tabriz broken branch rug for your room
At 340 x 250 cm this red Tabriz broken branch rug covers about 8.5 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 60 cm of rug past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs sit on it around a coffee table. For a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm sits with 50 cm at each end and 75 cm along each side. It suits a formal living room or a large family room.
Pale walls and timber floors let the red field and navy border stand out, and a plain sofa lets the medallion be the focus. Because the medallion sits at the centre, set the rug so its middle falls under the coffee table or dining table, not off to one side.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
