Red Super Kazak Afghan Rug
This red super Kazak Afghan rug is a hand knotted oriental rug made in Afghanistan from lamb wool, and it measures 436 x 303 cm. A deep red field holds a column of cream, navy and gold geometric medallions down its centre, so the red super Kazak Afghan rug has a bold, graphic look.
The design up close
Five large medallions run down the centre of this red super Kazak Afghan rug. The middle one is cream and hooked, with a blue and rust heart, and navy-outlined medallions with gold centres sit above and below it. Cream medallions with small blue and gold centres close the column at each end. Smaller stars, diamonds and hooked lozenges in cream, navy, gold, blue and green fill the spaces between them.
The border is cream and ivory, with rows of small motifs in red, brown, blue and green, and a narrow guard stripe runs beside it on each side. The cream border frames the red field, so the medallions stand out, and the fringe at the top and bottom ends finishes the rug. The cream band carries small stars, hooked forms and flower heads, repeated in rows along each side.
Where Kazak designs come from
The name comes from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory. Weavers in Afghanistan have revived these designs in recent decades, and this red super Kazak Afghan rug keeps that bold, geometric layout. Its medallions read clearly from across a room, and the cream border keeps the red from feeling heavy.
How this red super Kazak Afghan rug is made
Every knot was tied by hand, and the pile is lamb wool. Our records note vegetable dyes. Kazak rugs are woven in thick, hard-wearing wool, and this one is built the same way.
Sizing it for your room
At 436 x 303 cm the red super Kazak Afghan rug covers about 13.2 square metres, which suits a large living room or a generous family room. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 108 cm of rug showing past each end. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 98 cm at each end and 102 cm along each side. The red sits well with cream walls, timber floors and neutral or navy upholstery. It makes a strong centrepiece for a formal living room.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
