Red Super Fine Kazak Rug
This red super fine Kazak rug is a hand knotted Afghan rug made in Afghanistan from lamb’s wool, measuring 306 x 242 cm. An ivory field carries rows of red, blue and navy medallions, framed by a wide red border with small geometric flowers.
The design up close
Two large red octagonal medallions sit one above the other down the centre of the field, each with a cream and navy core and a ring of smaller motifs. Peach and cream medallions sit to the left and right of the middle, and between them rows of star-shaped flowers in blue, navy and peach fill the ground.
Hooked motifs in red and navy, and small angular shapes like tiny Ls, are set through the field in columns. Tiny diamonds and dots fill the spaces between them. A narrow blue line separates the ivory ground from the red border, so the field has a clear edge all the way round.
The wide border of this red super fine Kazak rug is red, with bands of small cream, blue and navy flowers and angular motifs. A thin cream line finishes the outer edge. The motifs sit close together, so the border reads as a dense pattern from a distance and as separate flowers up close.
Where the Kazak design comes from
The name comes from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory.
In recent decades, weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan have revived these designs, often using hand-spun wool and natural dyes. This red super fine Kazak rug is made in Afghanistan from lamb’s wool, and it follows the same bold palette of red, blue and ivory.
How this Kazak rug is made
Each knot is tied by hand on a loom, and the medallions and hooked shapes are built up knot by knot. That is why their outlines look crisp against the ivory ground. Our records note vegetable dyes and double knotting for this red super fine Kazak rug.
Sizing the red super fine Kazak rug
At 306 x 242 cm the rug covers about 7.4 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 43 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs facing the sofa can rest their front legs on the rug around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, the red super fine Kazak rug leaves 63 cm at each end and 76 cm along each side, so the chairs can slide back. Red and ivory suit cream walls, timber floors and neutral furniture, and the border gives a traditional room its character.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
