Red Sirjan Persian Rug
This red Sirjan Persian rug measures 246 x 179 cm, about 4.4 square metres, and was made in Iran. Its dark navy field carries a cream hexagonal medallion, with red and pink motifs set around it. Its shapes are bold and its centre point is clear, so this red Sirjan Persian rug reads quickly.
The design up close
The cream medallion at the centre has rows of small red, pink and blue flowers along its edges. Inside it, the cream ground holds red and gold motifs set in tidy rows. Around the medallion, elongated pendant shapes in pink, red and gold point outward toward the ends, and small geometric flowers fill the spaces between them. Toward the corners the navy shows through more clearly, which makes each motif stand out.
The border is a darker band with stylised blocks and small blue and cream flowers, set between narrow guard lines. The outer edge is a narrow band of blue and red, so the frame looks layered rather than flat. The red and pink motifs carry most of the colour, so the navy ground sits behind them as a calm backdrop. On this red Sirjan Persian rug, the medallion is the first thing you notice. The cream hexagon is the lightest area of the rug, so it draws attention even from a doorway.
Persian weaving and this rug
Every Persian rug in our collection is hand knotted in Iran, one knot at a time on a loom. A red Sirjan Persian rug is made the same way, with each knot tied by hand across the rug row by row.
Sizing your red Sirjan Persian rug
At 246 x 179 cm this red Sirjan Persian rug suits a living room, where the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. A sofa of about 2.2 m is close to the full length of the rug, so keep the coffee table central to leave the rug visible on both sides. In a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm leaves roughly 33 cm of rug past each end and 45 cm past each side.
In a room with plain walls, the navy field and cream medallion stand out clearly, and the rug fits the space without crowding the furniture. Keep at least 30 cm of bare floor between its edge and the nearest wall, so the border stays visible. Pale grey or cream walls let the cream medallion stand out, while darker walls make the navy field blend in.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
