Red Serapy Persian Runner
This red Serapy Persian runner is a double hand knotted piece from Iran, made in wool and measuring 314 x 85 cm, or about 2.7 square metres. Its cream field carries a column of bold medallions in red, maroon and navy, framed by red and cream borders. Our records note German dyes.
The design up close
Four medallions stack down the centre of the cream field, each outlined in red and filled with a different motif. The upper medallion is cream with dark red and navy geometry, the next is a deep maroon with small blocks of colour, and the third is red-orange with cream and navy details.
Between the medallions, small diamond and hook motifs in red, navy and cream link the stack together. At the lower end, a navy panel with a cream centre sits at the base of the field, with small flower forms in red and cream.
The border is built in layers. Narrow red and dark red stripes run close to the field, and a wider cream band carries rows of small square motifs in navy, red, orange and cream. A short fringe finishes the bottom end. Across this red Serapy Persian runner, the cream field is the lightest tone, and the red and navy motifs stand out against it.
Persian runners and weaving
Every rug in this collection was hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool and sometimes silk. A runner of this length, like this red Serapy Persian runner, is still tied by hand, row after row.
How it is made
This hand knotted runner rug is double hand knotted in wool, so each knot is tied by hand on the loom. Turn it over and the design shows on the back, with small irregularities where the knots sit. The cream field and the red borders make the runner look framed from end to end.
Sizing this red Serapy Persian runner
At 314 x 85 cm, this red Serapy Persian runner covers about 2.7 square metres and suits a hallway, where its length runs the full way along the floor. For a hallway, allow a floor width of about 105 to 125 cm, which leaves 10 to 20 cm of bare floor on each side of the runner.
Its cream field lightens a dark timber or tiled hallway, and the red borders add warmth near the walls. The runner can also sit beside a bed, but its 85 cm width suits a narrow space best.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
