Red Sarasar Kazak Rug
This red Sarasar Kazak rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan in lamb wool and measures 318 x 243 cm, about 7.7 square metres. A deep red field carries a central column of medallions in navy, cream and gold, and a wide cream border is worked with small geometric motifs.
The design up close
The medallions of this red Sarasar Kazak rug run down the centre of the field in a single column. A diamond-shaped medallion in navy, cream and gold sits at the top and another at the bottom. Between them are a navy and gold octagon, a cream hexagon with a navy centre, and a second navy and gold octagon lower down. Gold and cream medallions sit to each side of the column at the same heights, and their centres are navy.
Small rosettes, floral sprigs and star shapes fill the spaces between the large medallions in cream, navy, gold and blue. Their small scale leaves plenty of red ground showing, so the field looks lively without feeling crowded.
The border is a wide cream band with small diamond, star and hooked motifs in red, navy and brown. A narrow red band runs along the outer edge, and thin guard lines separate the cream border from the field.
Kazak rugs and their origins
Kazak rugs revive the bold geometric designs of the Caucasus in thick, hard-wearing wool. The name comes from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, where weavers made large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory. In recent decades, weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan have revived these designs. Their thick wool and busy pattern hide everyday wear, so Kazak rugs like this one suit family rooms, entrances and hallways.
How it is made
Each knot in this red Sarasar Kazak rug was tied by hand on a loom, one knot at a time. The design shows clearly on the back, where the medallions follow the same layout. Lamb wool gives the pile a soft surface underfoot.
Sizing this red Sarasar Kazak rug
At 318 x 243 cm, this red Sarasar Kazak rug covers about 7.7 square metres, a good size for a formal living room. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 49 cm of rug past each end. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 39 cm at each end and 72 cm along each side, enough for chairs to slide back. Red Sarasar Kazak rugs suit timber floors and white or cream walls. The navy and cream medallions give the red a calmer, more structured look, so it sits well beside dark timber furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
