Red Qashqaiee Persian Rug
This red Qashqaiee Persian rug is a hand knotted rug made in Iran from wool. At 290 x 200 cm it covers about 5.8 square metres, with a red field, a large diamond medallion at the centre and dark navy corners. It is a traditional piece with strong colour and plenty of small detail.
The design up close
The red field is built around a large diamond medallion that runs nearly the full length of the rug. Its outline is worked in rows of small dotted motifs in cream, pale blue and orange, so the edges look like beadwork from a short distance. Inside, a smaller dark medallion holds a cream rosette, ringed by small octagonal motifs in orange, cream and blue.
Around the diamond, the red ground carries narrow bands of small motifs that run parallel to its edges. They keep the eye moving from the centre out to the corners, so the rug reads as one connected field.
On this red Qashqaiee Persian rug the corners sit on a dark navy ground filled with small flowers and hooked motifs in red, orange, cream and blue. The navy ground keeps the bright motifs from crowding the corners. Each corner holds a square cream and red motif with a cream outline. A border of small cream and red figures, like stepped hooks, runs around the outside, above a plain red outer edge.
How this red Qashqaiee Persian rug is made
Every rug in our Persian collection is hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool and sometimes silk. Our records note hand knotting for this red Qashqaiee Persian rug, which is made from wool.
Sizing your red Qashqaiee Persian rug
At 290 x 200 cm this red Qashqaiee Persian rug covers about 5.8 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 35 cm of rug showing past each end, and two armchairs can sit with their front legs on it around a coffee table. For a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm sits with 55 cm of rug at each end and 55 cm along each side, so chairs pulled back will sit partly off it.
The red field suits cream or grey walls and pale timber, and the dark navy corners keep the colour grounded in a room with neutral furniture. Because the medallion is at the centre, set the rug so the middle falls under the coffee table or dining table, not off to one side. Its strong red can sit beside plain cream sofas without competing with them.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
