Red Medallion Kazak Rug
This red medallion Kazak rug was made in Afghanistan from lamb’s wool and measures 309 x 249 cm. Its red field carries rows of large medallions in cream and lilac, set inside a cream and purple border.
The design up close
The field is set out in rows of large medallions, most in cream and lilac with navy centres. Smaller diamonds in gold and navy sit between them, and small star and cross motifs in cream and gold fill the ground around each medallion. The navy centres of the medallions are the darkest points on the rug, so they catch the eye first.
The medallions run in three columns. The side columns hold large cream medallions, and the centre column alternates larger hexagon shapes with smaller diamonds from top to bottom. The border is cream with red, purple and blue motifs in narrow rows, and an outer red band sits at the edge. This red medallion Kazak rug has a tight, even layout, so the pattern holds together at any distance.
Where Kazak designs come from
The name comes from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured Kazak rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory. In recent decades, weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan have revived these designs, and this red medallion Kazak rug carries that geometric look into a rug made in Afghanistan. Their geometric medallions are set in rows, a layout that this rug follows closely.
How this red medallion Kazak rug is made
Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. Lamb’s wool forms the pile, and the red ground stays a single tone across the field. The cream and lilac medallions are outlined in navy, which keeps their edges clear. The small navy diamonds stand out against the red field between them.
Sizing it for your room
At 309 x 249 cm, this red medallion Kazak rug covers about 7.7 square metres. For a dining room, a six seat table of about 180 x 90 cm leaves about 65 cm of rug at each end and about 80 cm along each side, so chairs can be pulled out while staying on the rug. Placed under a dining table, this red medallion Kazak rug frames the table and chairs with its red field. In a living room, the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
