Red Kashan Sahara Rug
This red Kashan Sahara rug is a hand knotted rug made in Iran from wool. At 345 x 245 cm it covers about 8.5 square metres, with a red field, a navy and cream diamond medallion at the centre and a wide navy border with pale blue guard stripes.
The design up close
The red field is filled with fine floral vines in blue, yellow, cream and green, so the ground looks rich and busy from a short distance. At the centre, a navy diamond medallion holds a cream rosette, and the red field curves around it in large lobes.
The four corners of this red Kashan Sahara rug are navy spandrels with cream and pale blue motifs, and the wide navy border carries a vine of blue, cream and gold flowers. Pale blue guard stripes with cream dots separate the border from the field.
Between the field and the border of this red Kashan Sahara rug, several narrow bands of cream, blue and gold repeat the flower colours, so the edges look as detailed as the centre.
The navy diamond is the darkest shape in the centre of the field. Around it, the red and the cream rosettes set a warm, even rhythm across the ground.
How it is made
Our records note hand knotting for this red Kashan Sahara rug. It is made in Iran from wool. Quality in a rug like this depends on the wool, the colours, the design and how fine the knotting is.
Sizing this red Kashan Sahara rug for your room
At 345 x 245 cm this red Kashan Sahara rug covers about 8.5 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 63 cm of rug past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves about 53 cm at each end and 73 cm along each side.
A rug this size suits a formal living room or a large dining room, and its navy border sits well with cream and timber furniture.
Colour and where it suits
The red field and navy border make this rug a strong centrepiece for a room with cream or neutral walls. Pale timber floors let the colours stand out, and a plain sofa in cream, grey or blue keeps the room calm. Set the rug so its centre sits under the coffee table or dining table, since the medallion is the focus.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
