Red Kashan Medallion Rug
This red Kashan medallion rug is a hand knotted rug made in Iran from wool. At 380 x 285 cm it covers about 10.8 square metres, with a red field, a navy medallion at the centre and a wide tan and navy border. It is a traditional piece with a dense floral design.
The design up close
The red field of this red Kashan medallion rug is covered with fine floral vines and small flowers in cream, blue, yellow and orange, so the ground looks full from edge to edge. Along the edges of the red field, the vines curl in long, unbroken lines that carry the eye out toward the border. At the centre sits a navy medallion with a lobed outline, and inside it a small diamond in cream and blue. Navy spandrels fill the corners of the red field, with cream and blue motifs on each.
The border of this red Kashan medallion rug is wide and tan, with navy bands and vine scrolls in cream, orange and blue running along it. Narrow guard stripes sit between the border and the red field, so the field reads as a clear shape. Small blue accents appear in the corners of the outer border.
The navy medallion is the darkest shape in the centre of the rug. Because it sits in the middle, it anchors the eye, and the red field around it looks brighter by contrast.
How it is made
Our records note hand knotting for this red Kashan medallion rug. It is made in Iran from wool. Quality in a rug like this comes down to the wool, the colours, the design and how fine the knotting is.
Sizing this red Kashan medallion rug for your room
At 380 x 285 cm this red Kashan medallion rug covers about 10.8 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 80 cm of rug past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves about 70 cm at each end and about 90 cm along each side. A rug this size suits a formal living room or a large family room.
Warm timber floors and cream or grey walls suit the red field and navy medallion, and a plain sofa lets the pattern lead. Because the medallion sits at the centre, set the rug so its middle falls under the coffee table or dining table, not off to one side.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
