Red Hosseinabad Runner
This red Hosseinabad runner is hand woven in Hamadan Province in western Iran, and it measures 302 x 77 cm. A cream diamond medallion with a serrated edge stands out on the rust red field, which is worked with navy, cream and blue motifs and framed by a navy border, and its warm colours make it a focal point in a plain hall.
The design up close
The cream medallion is diamond shaped, with a zigzag edge and a red centre. Navy, dusty blue and cream motifs sit inside it, and small gold accents show near its middle. Its points reach toward the edges of the field. The cream is the lightest tone on the runner, and it stands out sharply against the red.
Around the medallion, the red field is busy with small flowers, hooked shapes and cross shapes in navy, cream, blue and dusty pink. A fine diagonal lattice in navy and olive joins them, and the motifs repeat in rows, so the pattern stays even along the length of this red Hosseinabad runner.
A band of small navy and cream rosettes runs along the border, between a narrow rust stripe and the dark navy outer edge. The navy is the darkest part of the runner, and it frames the red field on both sides. The rosettes repeat evenly, so the border looks continuous from end to end.
How a red Hosseinabad runner is made
Hosseinabad runners are hand woven in Hamadan Province, and handmade traditional rugs of this kind suit a long, narrow format. The wool is the main material, and its quality, along with the way it is spun, accounts for the durability these runners are known for. Its navy border and red ground give the runner a classic look, and the small motifs repeat in tidy rows.
Colour in your room
The rust red ground is warm, and it suits cream or pale grey walls and timber floors. Navy and cream furnishings sit well beside it, and the cream medallion lifts the pattern so the runner does not feel dark.
Sizing it for your room
At 302 x 77 cm this red Hosseinabad runner covers about 2.3 square metres. It suits a hallway, a kitchen galley or the floor beside a bed. Allow about 10 to 20 cm of floor on each side, so a hallway of roughly 97 to 117 cm wide suits it.
Placed along a hallway, this red Hosseinabad runner covers most of a short passage. Its warm colours keep a dim passage feeling lively.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
