Red Formal Tabriz Rug
This red formal Tabriz rug is a Persian rug, double hand knotted in Iran from wool. It measures 398 x 304 cm, which is about 12.1 square metres. A deep red field carries a large central medallion, and a wide cream border frames the whole rug.

At its centre sits a large medallion with a navy blue ring around a cream and gold rosette, and the outline of the medallion is lobed, so it reads as a separate shape rather than a plain circle. Small flowers in blue, green, cream and gold spread across the red from the medallion out toward the edges.
Pendant shapes sit above and below the medallion, and the corners of the red field hold gold and brown motifs that echo the centre. The field is busy with florals.
A cream main border runs around the field. It carries a dense pattern of vines and flowers in gold, rust and green, and a narrow darker band between the border and the outer edge finishes this red formal tabriz rug in deep red brown.
On this red formal Tabriz rug, a thin gold line traces the outline of the medallion, so its lobes stand out against the red. Pale blue grey petals sit between the lobes of the navy ring, close to the cream rosette.
Tabriz and its rugs
Tabriz, in north-west Iran, has been a centre of rug weaving for centuries. Its workshops are known for fine knotting and for a wide range of designs, from classic central medallions to all-over floral patterns. This red formal Tabriz rug follows the medallion layout that Tabriz is known for.
The quality of a Tabriz rug is often described by its raj, which is a count of knots over a set length of about seven centimetres. When you compare Tabriz rugs, the raj is the quickest way to compare two pieces of the same size.
How it is made
Each knot in this red formal Tabriz rug is tied by hand. Tabriz weavers have used the symmetrical (Turkish) knot since the mid 19th century, often with a small hooked knife, and the knot gives a firm, even surface. The pile is wool, and our records note German dyes.
Sizing it for your room
At 398 x 304 cm, the rug covers about 12.1 square metres. Under a 2.2 m three-seat sofa it leaves about 89 cm of rug showing past each end, so the sofa and two armchairs can all sit on it around a coffee table.
In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm for eight leaves roughly 79 cm of rug at each end and 102 cm along each side, enough for the chairs to slide back. A table of 180 x 90 cm for six leaves about 109 cm at each end and 107 cm along each side.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
