Red Floral Vines Tabriz Rug
This red floral vines Tabriz rug is a Persian rug from Iran, measuring 405 x 288 cm, about 11.7 square metres. Its wine red field is covered from edge to edge with small flower heads joined by fine vines, framed by a wide cream border.
The design up close
The field is an all-over pattern of small flower heads set on fine vines. Blue, gold, cream, pink and green flowers are spaced in staggered rows, so no single motif dominates. Between them the vines curl and branch across the red ground, which makes the whole field read as one continuous floral pattern. The vines cross the field at many angles, so there is no obvious direction to the pattern.
The border is cream with a tightly repeated vine of small flowers in red, blue and green, set between narrow navy and gold guard lines. Its width is about the same on all four sides, so the field sits evenly inside it. The inner guard is a thin navy line, which keeps the cream from merging with the red.
Up close, each flower has its own small mix of colours, while from a distance this red floral vines Tabriz rug reads as a single warm red field with a bright cream frame.
Tabriz weaving and this rug
Tabriz, in north-west Iran, has been a centre of rug weaving for centuries, and its workshops are known for fine knotting and designs that range from classic central medallions to all-over floral patterns. This red floral vines Tabriz rug has the all-over floral layout that those workshops are known for. Tabriz weavers have tied the symmetrical (Turkish) knot since the mid 19th century, often with a small hooked knife, which gives a firm, even surface.
Every Persian rug in our collection is hand knotted in Iran, and a room-size piece like this one can take a weaver many months.
Sizing your red floral vines Tabriz rug
At 405 x 288 cm this red floral vines Tabriz rug is a room-size piece for a large living room or formal dining room. A 2.2 m three-seat sofa sits on it with about 93 cm of rug past each end, and two armchairs can sit on it around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, which seats eight, the rug leaves roughly 83 cm at each end and 94 cm along each side. A red floral vines Tabriz rug suits cream walls, timber floors and neutral furniture, where its red field can be the warm centre of the room.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
