Red Floral Khorjin Rug
This red floral Khorjin rug was made in Afghanistan from lamb wool, double hand knotted, and measures 295 x 244 cm. Diamond medallions in cream and red run across the top and bottom of the field, while narrow stripes in red, cream, blue grey and green grey fill the middle. The colours sit close together, so the rug reads as one warm pattern rather than separate blocks.
The design up close
Along the top and bottom of the red floral Khorjin rug, a row of large diamond medallions sits side by side. Each diamond is cream or sand with a red and dark blue outline, and small rosettes in red, blue grey and ivory fill the gaps between them. Inside the bands, tiny blossoms and dots repeat in the same colours, which gives the rug its floral texture.
The middle of the field is striped. Narrow bands in red, cream, blue grey and green grey repeat down the rug, and several wider bands hold rows of small rosettes in red, cream and blue on a sand ground. Plain red stripes cut through the pattern at a few points, giving the centre a strong horizontal rhythm. The finest detail sits in those wider bands, where a close look from a chair shows each motif.
Khorjin rugs and their origin
Khorjin rugs take their name from the Khorjin, the woven saddlebag of the region. A Khorjin is a pair of woven bags joined together and carried over a horse or donkey, traditionally decorated with geometric patterns. Today’s Khorjin rugs take that look across the whole field, often in many colours. This red floral Khorjin rug keeps the geometric look with its stacked diamonds and striped bands, and its floral touches sit inside those shapes.
How it is made
This red floral Khorjin rug is hand knotted in Afghanistan, and our records note double hand knotting. Turn it over and the design shows on the back, with the small irregularities that come from tying each knot by hand. Lamb wool forms the pile, and each band is knotted in turn, so the stripes build up row by row.
Sizing this red floral Khorjin rug for your room
At 295 x 244 cm the rug covers about 7.2 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 38 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs facing it can rest their front legs on the far side. Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm it leaves roughly 58 cm at each end and 77 cm along each side, enough room for chairs to slide back.
This red floral Khorjin rug suits pale floors, white walls and neutral furniture, so the stripes do most of the work.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
